Banned? Sure are, somewhere

7 September 1985

Dick Caldwell, owner of The Book Lounge in the Springfield Mall, is doing a display for Banned Books Week. His five square feet front display will have a poster of various authors with black bars over their mouths. There will also be a mock book burning scene to complete the display. Caldwell’s nightmare is that book-banning will be the first step to the government taking control over access to information. Arlo Giles, Springfield Public Librarian, says that he can only recall eight requests in fifteen years where materials were challenged.
