I want to know

13 May 1989

In this question to the newspaper, the questioner wonders if there is a legal age limit to buying Playboy magazine and why does the Coos Bay Public Library allow minors to check it out. The newspaper responds with quotes from Sgt. Lee Benson and librarian Carol Ventgen about the issue. Sgt. Benson says that Oregon law states that there is no legal age to buy Playboy magazine. The law regarding nudity depends on whether the material in question is obscene or not. Ventgen says that minors can check out the magazine from the library because of a policy adopted many years ago by the library’s board of trustees. The policy says that “A person’s right to use a library should not be denied or abridged because of origin, age, background, or views.” She goes on to say that the librarian who restricts materials to minors cannot act in place of the parent, because of this librarians cannot act as a parent for children who use the library.
