Library group opposes OCA petition

24 June 1992

The Oregon Library Association urged Oregonians not to support the petition sponsored by the Oregon Citizens Alliance. Patrick Grace, chair of the OLA Intellectual Freedom Committee, explained that the language in the proposed law could lead to the challenge and removal of library books about homosexuality or those written by homosexual authors. Supporters of the petition want to amend the state constitution and stop special rights for homosexuals. However, the traditional mission of libraries is to protect the right to free speech and make diverse viewpoints available to patrons.
