What is the evidence of the use and effectiveness of sensory integration theory with adults who have chronic mental illness?

The results of this evidence based-literature review indicate that there may be a relationship between adults and sensory defensiveness, but the proper action of treatment in unknown. Sensory integration intervention lacks evidence of effectiveness with the adult population and consequently therapists should use caution when implementing this approach with clients as current research shows it to be inconclusive at this time.
Is a sensory integration approach effective at decreasing symptoms in adults with chronic mental illness?
