Abstract
Voters in Springfield approved the amendment to the city charter, sponsored by the Oregon Citizens Alliance, which prohibits the city from encouraging or promoting homosexuality. Supporters of the initiative want to rid libraries of “objectionable” books that encourage homosexuality. With just three challenges to Springfield library materials in 20 years, librarian Arlo Giles plans to continue selecting materials according to current policies. Opponents of the measure expect the OCA to subject teachers and civic workers to the same scrutiny as library materials.
