Nude paintings target of objections.

1 January 1989

Having paintings from the "Forces that Drive" series done by local artist, Bill Lutz, in the public library children's area raised a request from Rev Bill Walker of the First Baptist Church. His letter to the City Council and the Library Board requested that the paintings be removed at least from the children's area of the library. The quality of the paintings was not questioned, only the depiction of nudes in each painting. The paintings found both controversy and support in the community. Library Director, Shirley Gibbons, was aware putting the display in the library might cause controversy, but stated her intent was "not to offend, but to enlighten" and to support a well respected local artist. No decision had been reached at the time of this article.
