Conservative group targets objectionable books

27 May 1992

The Oregon Citizens Alliance (OCA) successfully sponsored the passage of the anti-gay measure which amends the Springfield charter, prohibiting city government from promoting or facilitating homosexuality. Supporters of the initiative want to rid libraries of objectionable books that encourage homosexuality. With just three challenges to Springfield library materials in 20 years, librarian Arlo Giles plans to continue selecting materials according to current policies. The Oregon Library Association approved a resolution against a similar measure the OCA is attempting to place on the statewide ballot.
