Purpose. The use of web 2.0 technologies such as blogs and wikis has become commonplace to users of the internet. However, literature describing the use of these technologies in pharmacy education is scant. A blog, called boxersoapnotes, was developed to address gaps in student-to-student communication while on Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiential (APPE) rotations. This private on-line community provides Pacific University PharmD students a place to discuss and highlight professional topics or challenges while on rotation from anywhere in the world. The objective of this study is to determine whether this forum/medium will appropriately address the needs of students during their final professional year, providing a place for professional growth and reflection during APPE rotations.
Methods. A series of two anonymous surveys will be administered to students four months after the launch of the blog and then in May 2010 when students are completing their final academic year of the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum. Both surveys will contain questions about the ease-of-use, student blogging habits, and utility of specific features of the blog. The second survey, given in May 2010, will contain additional questions aimed to measure the professional development and self-reflective aspects of blogging. These quantitative and qualitative survey data will be analyzed. The surveys will be administered and data collected through a subscription, secure internet-based survey tool, SurveyMonkey. This study has been submitted to the local Institutional Review Board and is pending review.
