Abstract
The anti-gay measure which prohibits the city of Springfield from encouraging or promoting homosexuality was recently passed. The Oregon Citizens Alliance, which sponsored the initiative, plans to check local school and public libraries for objectionable materials that promote homosexuality. Opponents of the measure fear that passage of this charter amendment could lead to the banning of books written by homosexual authors and the firing of personnel suspected of being homosexual. In the past 20 years, only three complaints have been made by local residents to challenge library materials.
