Designing an Integrated Perennial Food Forest

The Food Forest at Pacific University's B Street Permaculture Project has now begun its growth to a multi-layered, productive parcel of land which mimics a natural system. It will serve as forage for chickens, turkeys, goats, and sheep, give fruit, nuts, building materials, and medicinal teas to humans, and provide food, habitat, diversity, and resiliency to the greater ecosystem. This particular forest garden focuses on the presence of an already existing Black Walnut tree. Our research discovered how we could cultivate this area into something multiple times more productive and diverse than industrial agriculture while cutting costs and providing hand-on learning for Pacific students involved with helping us implement the project. We will also discuss different methods of propagation and grafting as an essential part in the intentions and success of ecological gardening.
