Abstract
Deep pressure is believed to have a calming effect on people with autism and other pervasive development disorders. Researchers have hypothesized that “deep pressure calms children by modulating their central nervous system processing of sensory information” (Fertel-Daly et al., 2001). Occupational therapists have been using deep pressure in therapy despite the lack of evidence-based research. The results of this article appraisal suggest the need for further research to validate the use of deep pressure in therapy.
What are the effects of deep pressure in therapy with children with autism?
