Library book sparks parent complaint

13 June 1984

A committee of parents and teachers recommended that “Are you there God? It’s Me, Margaret” not be removed from Rhododendron Elementary School library. Linda Acker, mother of fourth grader Misty Acker, was concerned that the book would encourage children to look at adult magazines and books. She also stated that the book condoned boys and girls being alone without their parents consent. The committee voted to keep the book in the school; however they recommended buying an edition without pictures and a cover aimed at older readers. The librarian, Lois Leighton, said that no younger students have showed an interest in the book. Unless the board rejects the recommendation to keep the book, the decision will stand as final.
