Political calendar: Newport library board opposes Measure 9

30 September 1992

The Newport Public Library board of trustees unanimously adopted a resolution to oppose Ballot Measure 9. If passed the measure would amend Oregon’s Constitution and prohibit state and local governments from using public funds or property to promote homosexuality. The measure’s language could be interpreted as requiring libraries to remove books about homosexuality. The board stated its responsibility to protect intellectual freedom and to oppose censorship.
