Book challenged

16 January 1986

The book “Witches and Witchcraft” by Adrienne Jack was challenged by parents Dawn and Doug Stover. The parents approached the libraries of Minter Bridge and Mooberry elementary schools to have the book removed. Dawn Stover says that she doesn’t feel the book is suitable for elementary aged children because it portrays witchcraft as an acceptable lifestyle. She also said the illustrations in the book are terrible for children. The challenge will follow procedure as established by the school district. There will be an informal discussion with the principal and superintendent. The parties did not reach a resolution so a hearing is scheduled for the complaint. A committee will then recommend whether the book should be retained or removed from the school library.
