Library rejects challenges to books

24 June 1993

Deschutes County Library Director Ralph Delamarter supports citizens' rights to challenge materials held by the library but based on the library's book selection policy, found no justification for removing 17 books about homosexuality. His review was initiated in response to Dorothy Oak's request that the library remove the books from its collection. The Deschutes County Library Board decided to retain the materials. Delamarter noted that challenges to materials take up significant staff time because each item must be reviewed individually.
