Freedom of expression saluted in banned book week

24 September 1996

The Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse provides a summary of the year’s challenges in libraries around Oregon. Between July 1, 1995 and June 30,1996 there were nineteen book challenges, five video challenges, four periodical challenges, and two recording challenges. Most libraries choose to keep access open, only one library restricted access to children under sixteen. Most complaints dealt with sexual content and graphic language. Other complaints dealt with scary or violent content. The Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse releases the annual report to coincide with Banned Books Week.
