Voters approve anti-gay measure

20 May 1992

Springfield residents passed Ballot Measure 20-08, an anti-gay rights measure that is the first of its kind in the state. Sponsored by the Oregon Citizens Alliance (OCA), the charter amendment would prohibit the city from promoting homosexuality. Supporters of the measure want to encourage “traditional family values.” The OCA started this campaign in response to the recommendation by the city’s Human Rights Commission to add sexual orientation to the list of groups protected from discrimination.
