OCA attempt to ban books way off base

28 May 1992

The Oregon Citizens Alliance wants to rid Springfield schools and libraries of “objectionable” books about homosexuality. The recent passage of the City Charter amendment prohibits the city from promoting or facilitating homosexuality. However, the mission of libraries is to offer a variety of educational materials. The amendment and a similar measure proposed for the state ballot were responses to Governor Neil Goldschmidt’s earlier order ensuring no discrimination against gays by the state government.
