Diagrammatic drawings, showing variations in the direction of the bristles: left - with the anterior teeth edge to edge, the bristles are swept straight up and down over the upper and lower teeth and gingivae; center - same as left, modified by a twist of the toothbrush - some of the dental or gingival areas are thereby omitted in the brushing; right - same as center except that the anterior teeth are in centric occlusion thus causing the more marked exclusion of the lower teeth and gums from the brushing process, of which the patient is completely unaware.
