Dulles authored book edict

1 January 1953

John Foster Dulles, the acting Secretary of State, drafted a document calling for the removal of books written by Communists and fellow-travelers from the shelves of American overseas libraries. There was considerable debate about how authors would be labeled Communists and who would decide what books to remove. The whole situation reportedly led to book-burning controversies in some of these overseas libraries and is currently under review by the President.
