The Seaside Library highlighted Banned Books Week by creating a display of materials challenged in the U.S. Librarian Reita Fackerell explained the library's mission is to provide reading materials, "regardless of their content", for all members of the public and to support the freedom to choose one's own reading material. Many books are challenged because of sex, profanity, violence, and racism but also because readers do not like the ending. Titles challenged most frequently in 1996, throughout the U.S., are discussed.
