Abstract
President Eisenhower conducted a press conference in relation to allegations of book burnings at overseas U.S. libraries. The President sent conflicting messages, at the same time condemning any book burning in relation to the suppression of ideas, but also saying that books advocating the overthrow of the government through Communism should be removed. The President did not signal making any definitive changes to the policies of the State Department in removing books from overseas libraries.
