Reading textbook adoption: Creating and implementing a process of evaluation specific to a school's needs

1 June 1997

As teachers, we know that effective reading instruction is critical to a child's success in school. Yet there still remains the question of how to choose the best reading series to meet the needs of all students. We also know that in order for any program to be effective, teachers must feel knowledgeable and excited about the program. In my project, I examined the steps Mountain View staff followed to find the most effective basal reading program for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. I assisted in this search by creating an evaluation tool derived from teacher input and a review of the literature. The staff referred to this instrument when they selected a new reading series.
