Clinicians often choose either open chain or closed chain exercises for . . their patients following ankle injury. The. purpose of thi1? study was to determine whether there was a significant difference in the strengthening efficacy between. closed chain (BAPS™ board) and open chain (therapeutic tubing) kinematic exercises for the ankle peroneal muscles. Thirty six subjects were randomly selected int~ one of two ankle strengthening. groups; the first group participated in exercises using rubber tubing, and the second group participated in exercises using a BAPS™ board. Each group was then given a six week training period with a specific training protocol. The strength of each subject's peroneal musculature was measured before and after the training period. There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the pre- and post-test scores of both groups indicating that at the end of the six week training period, there was an 'increase in peroneal strength. However, there , was not a significant difference (p < 0.05) in strength gained between the BAPS™ group and tubing group. These findings suggest that both programs are effective means of strengthening the peroneal musculature.
