The purpose of this study was to identify stressors of police officers following Kahn & Byosiere's (1992) Model of Stress in Organizations (See Fig. 1). Interviews were conducted with 30 police administrators in 16 states to determine how support systems were structured and what policies may be in place to help alleviate and prevent high levels of stress. An equal number of administrative officers in low and high crime areas were interviewed (15 high crime and 15 low crime), Size of the department was also taken into consideration, with all departments medium-sized (82-400 sworn officers) or large (more than 400 sworn officers). Results indicate that although support systems are readily available, many are not utilized, as officers often do not acknowledge their distress.
