Bridging the gap between mathematics and writing: Answering open-ended questions in math

18 June 1997

Abstract

Since the State of Oregon embraced school reform, the State has required rigorous testing of students. The test for mathematics not only includes objective tests with multiple choice answers. but also includes an open-ended question. This question requires students to solve a problem, use an appropriate problem solving method, and write about their thought processes. My research will focus on effective strategies for teachers to use with students to prepare them for the writing portion of the test. I will use a variety of strategies to teach students how to express their problem solving thought processes in written form. I will also evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies.
