For over 20 years, various identity development models have been proposed for ethnic and sexual minority groups. Little work, however, has been done with bisexuals as a specific group; in particular there is a need to better understand gender differences in bisexual identity development. This manuscript presents a modified model of bisexual identity development based on an empirically derived model of bisexual identity development (Weinberg, Williams, & Pryor, 1994). This modified model integrates research and theory from lesbian and gay identity development in an effort to better articulate gender differences in the bisexual identity development process. The resulting model delineates cornmon themes and experiences in the development of bisexual identity. Since hypotheses proposed are derived from lesbian and gay literature, further research is needed to test these hypotheses within the bisexual population.
