Abstract
Adolescent suicide is a significant and troubling public health issue in the United States. Although there have been attempts to develop suicide prevention programs for adolescents, there is no consensus as to what methods are most effective. One popular method of prevention is the implementation of school-based suicide awareness curriculums. Recently, another mode of treatment, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), has been used with adolescents who have engaged in parasuicidal behavior. These treatment modalities are reviewed, compared, and contrasted. A suicide prevention program for adolescents utilizing components of school-based suicide awareness curriculum and DBT is proposed. Potential barriers and limitations of the program are identified.
