[Pn. 5] Fat Looking: Exploring the Dialogue Between Visual Representations

19 October 2013

Is our concern over the ‘obesity epidemic’ simply a moral cudgel with which to denigrate those whose bodies do not conform to the social ideal? Through juxtaposing a public health campaign with a Fat Positive blog, this paper explores visual representations of the fat body in both and how these sites for looking are in dialogue with one another. In doing so, this paper seeks to deconstruct the boundary between public health and on the ground activism and challenge public narratives around health, bodies and identity.
