Background and purpose. Children with the diagnosis of spastic diplegic cerebral palsy have physical impairments associated with this diagnosis that contribute to inefficient ambulation. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a four week walking program on the walking efficiency in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. Methods. Four subjects were included in this study. Heart rate was used as a measure of determining the Energy Expenditure Index for each child during two pretests and a posttest after the walking program. The EnergyExpenditure Index values were then compared to determine any changes from pretests to posttest. Results. None of the subjects demonstrated a decrease in Energy Expenditure Index value from retests to posttest. For all subjects, the Energy Expenditure Index at post-test was higher than pretest one. Conclusion and Discussion. The four-week walking 'program that was prescribed was not effective in increasing ambulation efficiency in the four subjects studied. A more vigorous program of a longer duration supervised by a research associate may produce more significant results.
