Assessment of Health Care Access in the Public Health Clinics of Guayaquil, Ecuador

1 August 2004

The role of midlevel providers has not been used in the healthcare system of Ecuador. This project used a retrospective review of public health records, and a survey. The study examined whether there was a need to improve access to primary care in the clinics. of urban and rural communities of Guayaquil, Ecuador and whether midlevel providers could facilitate healthcare delivery in primary care. It was determined that access to primary care is limited, and that access could be improved by increasing the number of providers. It was also determined that the healthcare delivered in primary care is similar to that provided by midlevel clinicians in the US, making midlevel physicians a suitable choice to enhance the current workforce in the public health system of Guayaquil. .
