Thirty-two students aged 7 to 12 were administered three standardized eye movement tests (Developmental Eye Movement, Groffman, and Visagraph) as well as a questionnaire probing perception of their reading ability. In general, low correlation was found between standardized tests and questionnaire results. Students in this age group may not be reliable predictors of their own reading ability. Therefore, input from teachers, parents and objective tests should provide the basis for evaluation. Some guidance for optometrists in selecting the most appropriate test(s) to administer was determined. The OEM correlated with general reading performance. The Groffman correlated with leisure reading. The Visagraph correlated with comprehension after a single reading, use of a marker to maintain place and reading rate.
