The current research investigated factors that may influence treatment of deaf individuals in therapy settings. The literature on this topic was reviewed critically to determine the impact of certain factors on treating deaf individuals. Although no formal treatments have been established to competently and sensitively conduct therapy with deaf individuals, implications of factors that may affect treatment are described. Common themes across educational and psychological literature were summarized, as well as suggestions for future research. The information from the literature review was interfaced with the multicultural competency framework developed by Sue et al. (1998) and new guidelines were developed to be more specific in treating deaf clients.
