A survey of the history and development of eight-man football in the United States

1 August 1951

It was the purpose or this study (1) to trace the history and development of the eight-man football game from its origin to the present time; (2) to determine the extent to which the eight-man football game is being played; and (3) to present a few of the most common defensive and offensive formations employed in this type of game. It is desirable that a set of uniform rules and field dimensions be adopted. It would be advantageous if a national governing body, such as we have in six-man and eleven-man football, could be established. It is essential to the eight-man game of football that a compilation of all available data concerning this game be completed. This data should be made available to those persons interested in research or in the development of the various phases of the game.
