The purpose of this research is to explore how cooperative learning is
implemented in the classroom and to observe how students respond to this
method. I used previous research as a foundation from which to examine the
implementation of this method and its influence on a classroom of fourth
graders. The study took place in a fourth grade classroom located just outside
the city limits of a northwestern metropolis. Using qualitative research
methods, I collected data taking observational notes, using audio recordings,
reading student surveys and interviewing both the teacher and the students.
I concluded that cooperative learning lessons must encompass specific
essential elements in order to be successful. It is vital that teachers properly
implement the fundamental components that structure this learning
