The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of training eccentrically versus training both concentrically and eccentrically on torque production of the quadricep femoris muscle in sixteen health subjects during a six week period. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups: an eccentric training and a concentric/eccentric training. Testing and training were performed on an isokinetic dynamometer (Kin-Com) at 120 degree/sec. Pre and post-training peak and average concentric and eccentric torque measurements were obtained from both groups. A two-way ANOVA with repeated measures and paired t-tests were used to determine the effects of training. The eccentric group demonstrated significant increases in eccentric peak and average torque (p < 0.05). The concentric/eccentric group demonstrated significant increases in both eccentric and concentric peak and average torque (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the two training groups. These results support the concept of mode specificity in isokinetic eccentric training.
