Background and purpose. Due to limited research on the accuracy of Jamaican screening instruments in identifying developmental delay, the occurrence of misidentification is of concern. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the use of two Jamaican instruments: Ten Question screen (TQ) and Developmental Screening Checklist (DSCL) for identification of developmental delay in Jamaica children between the ages of two and six.
Methods. One hundred and twelve subjects from the parish of St. Catherine, Jamaica were screened for developmental delay using the TQ and DSCL The results from the TQ and DSCL were compared against screening results from the Denver II, to establish rates of false positives and false negatives.
Results. Statistical analysis with McNemar Chi Square revealed a statistically significant difference between the results of the TQ/Denver II comparison and the DSCL/Denver II comparison (p=O.005). The rate of false positives and false negatives (disagreement) was 37% on the DSCL and 41 % on the TQ.
Conclusion and Discussion. When the TQ and the DSCL were compared against the Denver II, the most significant finding was the high rate of false negatives in the identification of developmental delay. This study emphasizes the fact that Jamaican screening instruments without established norms must be used with caution when assessing for developmental delay.
