This is an analytical paper which explores various management techniques to consider when creating a classroom management plan at the elementary level. The information provides management ideas for future and current educators to utilize in their classroom to promote a positive environment within their classroom, as well as to create a system that exceeds the disciplinary aspects in the classroom. The focus or conceptual foundation of the paper revolves around the notion of classroom management as an all-inclusive component in a successful classroom. In addition to this idea, I have focused on techniques which specifically foster the student's self-discipline, responsibility and esteem, as well as valuing the child ,as:; an individual. The observations took place in a kindergarten and a fourth grade classroom in a metropolitan school. I interviewed several students and teachers to determine the types of management systems being used within these elementary classrooms. The research covers specific strategies to incorporate into the management plan prior to the beginning of the school year. These strategies include such aspects as seating arrangement, the creation of rules, teacher personality, and student self-discipline.
The research also covers specific theories such as Assertive Discipline, the Invitational Elementary Classroom, and the Interactionalist Theory. The selected theories are just a sprinkling of the many theories on classroom management, but they share the major characteristics of other theories used in the elementary classroom today.
