Patient education has been shown to reduce hospital costs, shorten the patient's length of hospital stay, improve patient satisfaction, and decrease patient anxiety. In today's healthcare system there is an ever increasing demand to decrease costs without compromising patient care. For this reason, continued research in this area is needed. This study analyzed the effectiveness of preoperative education on the learning of four individuals undergoing total knee replacements. The effectiveness was determined by a 14 item questionnaire that addressed the content of the class, the patients' pain and anxiety, and their preferred style of learning. Results from a questionnaire given immediately after a preoperative education class were compared to a questionnaire given the day before surgery. Results suggest that the subjects' knowledge of topics covered in class decreased and their current level of pain decreased.
