Seventy-nine 11 th grade students at Sunset High School in Beaverton, Oregon were surveyed in order to gain information pertaining to factors affecting students motivation to enroll in high school chemistry. The survey consisted of two sections. The first section consisted of the three statements: Do you consider chemistry important to your future?; Are you comfortable with math?; and, would you be more willing to take a chemistry class if it were less mathematical? There was no difference in responses between students who have taken chemistry and students who have not taken chemistry for all three questions. The second section which consisted of ten statements describing various chemistry curricula, indicated students prefer subjects which would be considered more personally relevant. Additionally, there was no difference in subject preference between students who have taken chemistry and those who have not. Finally, a description was outlined for a course designed to meet the needs of a broader range of students.
