Couples Treatment From a Gestalt Perspective For Alcohol Misuse, Abuse, or Dependence: A Literature Review

17 April 2009

In an effort to create a "no-wrong-door" policy for couples seeking treatment for relationship issues where alcohol misuse issues are also present, this literature review explores the influences of alcohol consumption on relationship functioning in the context of Gestalt couple's therapy. Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy and an Alcohol Problem's Framework proposed by Roberts and McCrady (2003) in conjunction with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism are discussed as methods of understanding and treating co-occurring disorders within a Gestalt Therapy framework. Recommendations for empirical validation are discussed in the conclusion.
