Screening blackjack dealers for carpal tunnel syndrome

1 May 1993

There is concern among blackjack dealers that they are at risk for developing carpal tunnel syndrome (C.T.S.). Unfortunately not much research has been done with this occupational group in this regard. This study was an attempt to do just that. Surveys were collected from twenty-three blackjack dealers. Dealers filled out a hand diagram of symptoms as well as provided demographic information. The results showed that the population surveyed had an 8% risk of getting C.T.S.. Several dealers complained of bilateral symptoms. Due to the fact that only small numbers of subjects were studied, further research should be carried out. If this population is truly at risk, preventative methods could be implemented.
