This study is primarily concerned with the educational problems of a tribal people in India called the Khasis. There is a pressing and urgent need for a better approach to education--a system of education that is related to realities, to the needs of the people, and which is necessary for their progress and welfare. This study does not aim to be a cure-all for the defects of education in Khasi at present. It does not attempt to cover all the social ills of the people. It is an attempt to show that, with a better approach, formal education can be of service to the people by educating them to know themselves, their neighbors, their country and its problems, and many other aspects of life that make it worth living.
