The purpose of this study was to investigate if balance deficits were present due to decreased proprioceptive sensation in hemophilic arthropathy. Nine males with hemophilia were tested using the Equitest Balance System. Each subject was tested using the Motor Control Test (MCT) with eyes open and eyes closed, followed by the Sensory Organization Test (SOT) as outlined by the Equitest ' system. The MCT ,involved the subject standing' on two moveable forceplates that translated in the anterior/posterior directions. Horizontal translations consisted of small (250ms), medium (300ms), and large (400ms) perturbations. Subjects performed trials with eyes open and then with eyes closed. The SOT involved six different conditions that incorporate normal or sway-referenced environments. Equilihrium and strategy scores were obtained for conditions 1-6. No significant differences in equilibrium scores were found between males with hemophilia and normal values in any of the six sensory conditions. There were no difference between the ability to use the visual, somatosensory, or vestibular systems. Results also revealed that there were no abnormal patterns of hip or ankle strategies in males with hemophilia when regaining their center of gravity.
