A typical high school student faces many situations throughout their normal day that have an overriding impact on their lives. There are many more facets of an education besides what they learn from their classroom teacher. The influences that their friends have on them plays a key role in their development.
Through an examination of a typical American high school, I looked for the factors that helped build these friendships. What roles do gender, ethnic background, and participation in extracurricular activities have on the friendships of high school students? My research consisted of observations of classrooms and student interaction in the hallways, and an interview with an average high school student.
It is my hope that the following paper can provide some insight on the main factors that influence how high school students form friendships, and what elements are taken into consideration when high school students choose their friends.
