Comparing Sleep Quality and Quantity Using a Blue Light Filtering Lens

PURPOSE. The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of blue light filtering conditions on sleep quality and sleep quantity in healthy optometry students using surveys and objective sleep data. METHODS. Twenty-three healthy subjects completed the study. The subjects went through a crossover study with three groups: a control group with clear lenses and no software adjustment, and two treatment groups: one utilizing a blue light filtering lens and using blue light filtering software adjustment. Subjects completed both the PSQI and ESS at the end of each treatment as a measure of sleep quality. Subjects self-reported hours of screen use and hours of near work daily. Spectrometer readings evaluated the light luminance and wavelength of the subject’s study space and electronic devices. A Fitbit Charge HR 3 provided an objective measurement of sleep quantity throughout the study. RESULTS. Each subject’s post-treatment results were compared to their control group results using Mixed Model Analysis in SPSS. There was a significant difference in ESS score sleep quality between the blue light filtering lens treatment and control group (p=0.015). There was also a significant difference in total sleep between the blue light filtering lens treatment and software adjustment treatment (p=0.049). There was no significant difference for PSQI scores, REM sleep (Minutes) or deep sleep (minutes) between the control condition group and either of the experimental groups. CONCLUSION. Wearing either blue light filtering lenses or utilizing software adjustment programs did not significantly alter REM sleep or deep sleep. Sleep quality as measured by the PSQI was not significantly altered by filtration of blue light using either software adjustment programs or blue filtering lenses. Only the ESS provided a statistically significant improvement in score between the control group and either treatment group. Further investigation is needed.
