This review explores the relationship between couples' levels of differentiation and the subsequent communication patterns that develop as a result of those underlying differentiation levels. Through the review of the literature, it appears that differentiation has an impact on communication patterns and may assist in understanding the underlying roots of couples' communication patterns. Understanding the relationship between levels of differentiation and communication can be useful for working with young adults on the differentiation process, which in tum may assist in establishing a stronger sense of self and alleviate future marital discord. Future researchers should further assess the details of the relationship between differentiation and communication.
