Abstract
Problems with common variance in the MMPI/MMPI-2 have contributed to its reduced discriminate validity. A review of the literature related to common variance in the MMPI found remarkable consensus that two factors account for the majority of the variance in the instrument. A review of four possible methods to correct for the dominating effects of this variance found several promising possibilities, but substantial research is required to determine the validity and usefulness of each.
