In the past five years there has been an explosion of children born drug/alcohol affected. These children can be defined as those who were prenatally exposed to some type of drug(s) and/or alcohol at varying degrees. They often exhibit short attention spans, mood swings, physiological problems, and much more. Their success in the classroom must be achieved by dealing with the above characteristics.
The purpose of this project is to examine the characteristics seen in these children and the behaviors they exhibit in the classroom. A review of the literature and naturalistic observations in two separate classrooms were carried out to achieve this purpose. The observations were based on 15 hours spent in two classrooms over a four week period.
Findings indicate that our current educational system must change in order to meet the needs of these children. Several recommendations are provided to achieve this goal.
