Energy Expenditure During Body Weight Supported Treadmill Training

Background and Purpose. Despite the abundance of research conducted on body weight supported treadmill training (BWSTT), there is insufficient research on the energy expenditure of ambulation with different percentages of body weight support (BWS). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare heart rate (RR), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), blood pressure (BP), and oxygen consumption (V02) under different percentages of BWS, to determine how the effect of supporting a portion of the body, and subsequently how the amount of energy expended during ambulation would be altered.

Methods. 26 normal college-aged students volunteered for testing. They were - all tested under 0, 15,30, and 45% BWS ambulating at a self-selected speed.

Results. Data showed a significant decrease in the V02 between 0% and 30%, 0% and 45%, and 15% and 45%.

Conclusion and Discussion. Supporting part of the body weight while ambulating on a treadmill decreases the amount of energy expended in normal college aged students. However, no significant reduction in energy expenditure was seen until 30% BWS.
